Sunday morning as I climbed into the truck I looked up at the temperature gage and it read 5 degrees, it was then and there I thought Lindsey might be onto something when she calls me and Tyg crazy. She claims we are crazy because we leave early in the morning but in this case not only was I leaving early but I was leaving a nice warm bed and headed out to the cold and I didn’t know what Tyg and I were doing or where we were headed. I had a fishing pole, shotgun, and rifle with me so I was prepared for whatever we decided to do that day. The sad thing is that I think this kind of “crazy” is dying as the generations grow up and video games take the place of out door recreation, granted it is not as easy to go hunting and fishing as it was in my dad and grandpa’s youth but it is still possible. The video game can never replace the way I felt the fist time I was able to go hunting with my dad and his buddies, it is a trip that my dad and I talk about still today. If the only fishing I had ever done was on a video game system I would have missed out on a lot of quality time with my grandpa, dad and uncles. I think I will post some stories from those trips at a later date. Today my dad will still come out fishing with me from time to time but most of my hunting is spent with my brother, sometimes we don’t bag anything but it is time that we get to be brothers, sometimes we get into some pickles but they are good stories to laugh and talk about later, I have seen my brother fall down face first into icy water, I almost shot both of us in the foot, I ruined the front end of my truck speeding into a ditch while watching a flock of doves. Then there are the times we find something that we had no idea was even there. This Sunday we didn’t even get the guns or fishing poles out, we ended up coming across one of the outposts on the pony express trail, we nosed around there for a bit but after battling the snowy roads we were out of time and had to be back for dinner with the grandparents. We still had a blast though and it was something that never would have happened while watching TV or playing video games. It saddens me that this trend is fading with my generation. But there is some hope, I see guys when I am out fishing or hunting and they got their kids, sometimes it is very easy to see that mom dressed them before heading out, you can barley make out that there is a kid stuffed into all those layers. But weather it is hunting in the cold or fishing in the heat the kids always seem happy to be with their dad. I guess what I am trying to say is the most fun I have had in my life has been spent outside, hunting, fishing or just peddling the bike around the neighborhood and it saddens me that that the neighborhoods are quiet in the summer and seeing kids out fishing and hunting is more rare than common.
